Disney Monorail Manufacturer Warned Potential for Crash

You may recall a few months ago, Disney’s monorail suffered an accident taking the life of one of the train operators. According to this article, the manufacturer warned the potential existed for a crash like this if the proper precautions were not taken.

An operating manual written for the Disney trains by Bombardier Inc. warned that driving the vehicles in reverse “is a potentially hazardous operation even under the best conditions” and “strongly recommended” that an observer be stationed at the opposite end of a train whenever one is backing up.

Entire article.

Keep in mind that fatality was the first in Disney’s 38 year history of monorail operation. I wonder the number of fatalities that occurred in passenger cars going to/from area hotels in that time frame!

Disney World Monorail Power Outage Strands Many On Trains

A power outage running the Disney World monorail system caused hundreds of passengers to be stuck on the trains for two hours early in the morning on December 13th.

According to this article, it is “the latest in a series of transportation problems since July, when 21-year-old monorail pilot Austin Wuennenberg was killed in a fatal monorail collision.”

I, for one, question the “series of transportation problems”… two incidents does not a series make. What other problems were there? I do think this type of problem shows a flaw in the monorail type of transportation as compared with other train service where you are not “stuck” if a problem occurs. There should be some simple escape route on a monorail, perhaps something similar to the inflatable slides that airplanes deploy in an emergency.

Phoenix, AZ residents and light rail

The most surprising item in this article was that Phoenix has light rail. I did not know!

The pedestrians (Phoenix has pedestrians too!) seem to have problems with hearing the trains and discovering one could be bearing down on them.

Seems like a case for monorail service in pedestrian heavy locales.
