But I would be willing to bet that most of us abandoned those trains rather quickly because they were a little boring. There are many aspects to model trains that children love. There are also many aspects of the hobby that are educational. The two things do not need to be mutually exclusive. If you want a child to be interested in things, you need to introduce them to things that interest them, not you. For example, you may be fascinated by the history of railroading in general and love to learn about it to ensure your layouts are as accurate as possible. Children generally are not interested in history, so you first need to get them interested in something else, and then parlay that interest into more aspects of the hobby until eventually, they will be begging you to help them learn about the history too.

So what interests children? One thing is stuff that moves, especially for younger children. They love to watch the trains go around and listen to the sounds they make. Watching will last only so long though, and they will want to get involved. Let them push the button to start the locomotive. Teach them to right a train that has fallen off the track. Help them learn to troubleshoot a train that stops moving. Point out details in the scenery that may interest them like a playground that you have modeled or trucks that are in place to move the goods brought in by your railroad. Let them paint some of your buildings to give them some ownership of your layout. Teach them that toy model trains and real model trains are not the same, and they need to respect that.

There are some things that children will need to be older to help with, like the controls, wiring, and electrical connections. Make sure you teach them how to safely operate your trains and set down rules that they cannot touch those items if you are not around. Also, be prepared for some broken items. Children are just that way, they break things. It is a great way to learn. Be patient and let them learn those lessons without getting upset.

Toy model trains are a great introduction to model railroading for children, but to make sure it is not the end of their interest, get them involved in the hobby and keep them interested. Model railroading is a great pastime for children and adults to enjoy together. It is a rewarding way to connect with your children or grandchildren.
