Even in these budget crisis times, we occasionally see good news for transit and train supporters. Today, I make note of two developments:

North Texas TEXRail – a Fort Worth, Grapevine and Dallas/Fort Worth Airport commuter line in development has a target date in 2016 for passenger service to begin. Read more here.

Dayton Florida – plans are underway to bring Amtrak service back to the east coast of Florida. Read more here.

This is not where we want to be, it is not bullet or high speed rail, but it is a step in the right direction for those that want to see us become a greener, more energy dependent country.

Toy Model Trains

Many of us have had toy model trains as children. We loved watching them go around the track (usually a simple circle or oval) and listening to the chug chug of the locomotive. But I would be willing to bet that most of us abandoned those trains rather quickly because they were a little boring. Model train enthusiasts today, know that model railroading can be anything but boring. There are so many aspects to keep your attention that a lifetime is not enough to thoroughly explore them all. So how do you keep children interested? Read on for some ideas.

There are many aspects to model trains that children love. There are also many aspects of the hobby that are educational. The two things do not need to be mutually exclusive. If you want a child to be interested in things, you need to introduce them to things that interest them, not you. For example, you may be fascinated by the history of railroading in general and love to learn about it to ensure your layouts are as accurate as possible. Children generally are not interested in history, so you first need to get them interested in something else, and then parlay that interest into more aspects of the hobby until eventually, they will be begging you to help them learn about the history too.

So what interests children? One thing is stuff that moves, especially for younger children. They love to watch the trains go around and listen to the sounds they make. Watching will last only so long though, and they will want to get involved. Let them push the button to start the locomotive. Teach them to right a train that has fallen off the track. Help them learn to troubleshoot a train that stops moving. Point out details in the scenery that may interest them like a playground that you have modeled or trucks that are in place to move the goods brought in by your railroad. Let them paint some of your buildings to give them some ownership of your layout. Teach them that toy model trains and real model trains are not the same, and they need to respect that.

There are some things that children will need to be older to help with, like the controls, wiring, and electrical connections. Make sure you teach them how to safely operate your trains and set down rules that they cannot touch those items if you are not around. Also, be prepared for some broken items. Children are just that way, they break things. It is a great way to learn. Be patient and let them learn those lessons without getting upset.

Toy model trains are a great introduction to model railroading for children, but to make sure it is not the end of their interest, get them involved in the hobby and keep them interested. Model railroading is a great pastime for children and adults to enjoy together. It is a rewarding way to connect with your children or grandchildren. Try it, and you may just have a companion in your hobby forever.

Do you know that for so many years now a lot of companies are manufacturing toy and model trains? Toy trains for little children as well as toy trains for serious collectors have been produced over the years. This just shows how much we, children and adults alike, love toy trains. One of the most known manufacturers of toy and model trains is Lionel trains. It has already produced a whole lot of toy and model trains since it began manufacturing in the early 1900′s. If you wish to buy one, Lionel store has a lot to offer. They also provide you with a lot of accessories that make your model trains look like the real world. Lionel train assistants are very willing to provide you with assistance that you need in choosing your personal choice of train among a wide variety of trains they are offering. Another toy train manufacturer is the MTH Company. This company is most famous for being able to lower model train prices for their own originally designed MTH model trains. This company, at one time subcontractor for the Lionel Company, also added sound and movement technologies to model trains. This company is also one of the leaders in manufacturing model trains using the O type model. Aside from that, they also add extra dimensions to the collection and operation of train systems by manufacturing subway and trolley cars.

Another major company in manufacturing model trains is a German company named LGB model trains. This company is famous in producing large scale model trains that are based on widely known rail lines in Europe. What makes them more famous are their 1/22 gauge models. The LGB is also known to have manufactured model trains that are based on American railroads, and most of all, their model train sets that have themes such as Disney and Peanuts, which we all love so much.

There are also many types and gauges of model trains manufactured by the Bachmann company, another major manufacturer of model trains. Under license from Union Pacific Railroad, Bachmann offers Digital Command Control systems that operate their model trains. They also offer individual cars as well as collector sets for sale.

So, that’s it. Because of our love of trains, these companies exist for a long period of time now. The next time you want to buy a toy train for your son or start collecting for yourself, you can choose to have it from a lot of leading companies that manufacture high-quality trains. And for your convenience and ease, you can easily look at a wide variety of available sets and individual cars over the internet. Or if you want, you can go to your favorite local hobby store and choose the toy train of your personal choice of preference. There are also available accessories and upgrades that you can choose from to make it more fun to you.
